Beginning of Year Parent Letter

August 15, 2016

Dear Parents,

My homework every night is for the 7th and 8th grade students to read and do any assigned work in the Holt Online Textbook.   At the beginning of the year, each student will take a STAR READING TEST to give them their reading level.  Our testing program, Accelerated Reader, shows through their statistics that a student that reads a minimum of 30 minutes each day will drastically improve their testing scores. Please help me make sure they are doing their reading homework.   We have great parents that support our school in every aspect. Please help to make our students more responsible for their assignments, and to make sure they are here every day if possible. Students will be required to pass library books each quarter.

Students are required to read 8 books this year.  They need to read a minimum of 2 books a quarter.   I do give an English grade on their book tests. These book tests will be averaged in with the other grades taken during the nine week period. Failure to pass the book will result in a “0” in the grade book. You may check your child’s grades on their HAC eschool account. English grades are taken on Common Core skills. On Monday morning for bell work, students will be given a reading passage from Renaissance 360 and questions to answer by Friday of that week, so your child should be on time to be able to work on these passages.  On Friday these questions will be checked by the other members of the  group your child is assigned. We work as a team –trying to help each other do our very best. They must be through before the tardy bell rings.  If they are late for class for an unexcused reason, they will miss the 360 assignment covered that day.  A grade is taken on Friday over the 360 article. That is why students need to be here on time daily.  We will be using released items for the ACT Aspire Test this year. The test is a two day test that takes about four hours. It will be given in the spring. Eighth grade students that do not score ready or exceeding in the subject areas will be remediated their 9th grade year.

Students will also be given a researched based argumentative writing assignment each semester. Check on their class‘s web page under assignments and when their book tests are due.  If you have any questions, contact me at school. You as great parents can make a great difference in keeping DHS an excellent school academically. We have a great school and wonderful students. You as supportive parents have made this possible.

The following items are required for my class: composition book, package of click pencils, and if your child brings a box of kleenex ,he or she will receive 20 bonus points on a graded assignment.

YOUR CHILD MUST RETURN THIS LETTER TO ME.

PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN THIS LETTER.
